Journey
Born Walukagga Shafik in Kampala, Uganda, Fik Fameica emerged from Uganda’s vibrant hip-hop scene to become one of the country’s most recognisable contemporary rappers. Also known as Fresh Bwoy and King Kong, he has built his sound around hip-hop while drawing from Afropop, Afrobeats and dancehall. His ability to move between rap and more melodic, dance-oriented records, often while performing in Luganda, has helped him connect with audiences both in Uganda and across East Africa.
Fameica began his professional music career in 2015 with the release of “Pistol” under Black Man Town, a label led by Ugandan artist Geosteady. He later released songs including “Salawo” and “Mbega Wa Bbaala,” which helped him secure a recording deal with Kama Ivien Management. His breakthrough came in 2017 with songs such as “Batuwulira” and “Byenyenya.” The growing popularity of his music made him one of Uganda’s most sought-after performers that year and established him as a rising name in the country’s rap scene.
The momentum continued into 2018, when Fameica released a run of successful songs including “Kutama,” “Mafia,” “Property,” “Sconto” and “Tonsukuma.” “Kutama” became particularly important to his rise, earning him recognition at the HiPipo Music Awards, where he won Breakthrough Artist of the Year and Best Hip-Hop/Rap Song. He also received further recognition at the Zzina Awards, winning Artist of the Year and Breakthrough Artist of the Year, while the Buzz Teeniez Awards recognised him with awards including Teeniez Male Artist of the Year and Top Hood Rapper.
His success during this period established Fameica as more than a promising newcomer. His 2018 project “My Journey” reflected the different sides of his artistry, combining his rap foundation with the Afropop and dancehall influences that had become increasingly visible in his music. Rather than confining himself to one sound, he continued experimenting with styles that allowed him to appeal to both Uganda’s hip-hop audience and the wider African pop market.
Fameica's growing profile also opened the door to collaborations beyond Uganda. In 2018, he worked with Tanzanian singer Rayvanny on “Mwaga” and with Ugandan artists including Vinka and Sheebah. The following year, he joined Nigerian singer Patoranking on “Omu Bwati,” giving him an opportunity to reach a broader African audience. In 2019, he also established Fresh Gang Records, expanding his role from recording artist to music entrepreneur.
His achievements continued to extend beyond music awards. In 2019, Fameica was named Most Stylish Male Artiste of the Year at the Abryanz Style and Fashion Awards, adding fashion recognition to the accolades he had already earned for his music.
Fameica remained active through the 2020s, releasing new music and collaborations while maintaining his connection to Luganda-language rap. His work continued to receive recognition at the HiPipo Music Awards, where he won Best LugaFlow/Rap Artist and Best LugaFlow/Rap Song for “Buligita” in 2021. He also received further recognition at the 2022 awards, including Best Fans Team and Best LugaFlow/Rap Song.
Across his career, Fameica has developed a style that balances the directness of hip-hop with the accessibility of Afropop, Afrobeats and dancehall. His use of Luganda remains an important part of his identity, allowing him to maintain a strong connection to Ugandan culture while collaborating with artists from other African markets.
